Twitter In a Nutshell

As social networks go, Twitter is even younger than the rest of the pack. Currently the world’s fastest-growing social network, Twitter is the brainchild of three men: Evan Williams, the founder of blogging platform Blogger, Biz Stone, partial creator of platforms like Blogger and Xanga, and Jack Dorsey, whose technical skills and experience provided the foundation for Twitter’s architecture.

Twitter was conceptualized and created in a very short period of time; based on a single sketch and a day-long brainstorm session at Podcasting company Odeo, where all three Twitter co-founders worked. Development took a short two weeks, and Jack Dorsey made the first “tweet”,” or Twitter message, in March of 2006. Initially used as an internal Odeo communication system, Twitter launched publicly in July of that year. By April of 2007, Stone, Dorsey and Williams had formed their own company, bought out Odeo and all of its assets, including Twitter, and begun to focus their attentions solely on what would come to be known as “microblogging.”

On its surface, Twitter is a remarkably simple platform, comprised solely of status updates, similar to those that users make on Facebook, in Instant Messaging clients, and on other social networks. Unlike other social networks, however, those status updates, or “tweets” are the sum total of what users can do on Twitter. When users want to share photos, they “tweet” a link to the photo, rather than actually upload that photo directly to the Twitter website. Tweets are limited to 140 characters, since Twitter’s original conception revolved around the idea of the service being accessible via SMS text messages, making the service accessible to almost anyone with a mobile phone.

In the years that have followed, Twitter has become wildly popular with both celebrities and normal folks, finding applications covering the full spectrum from personal use to business. Companies use Twitter to provide a client-facing touch-point that has a truly unique, “human” feel to it. Since Dell introduced Twitter-based promotions, for example, the PC manufacturer has made millions – without ever spending a penny. Comcast’s “Comcast Cares” Twitter account has helped to salvage the company’s reputation for terrible customer service. Kogi BBQ, a Los Angeles-based Korean Barbecue cart whose customers line up around the block, broadcasts its schedule and location via Twitter.

When it comes to personal use, there’s almost no limit to the ways that people find to use the microblogging platform. As opposed to other social networks, where you strengthen your ties with your real-world friends, Twitter encourages users to network with perfect strangers – strangers you may actually have more in common with than real-world friends. Every Twitter user has “followers” – people who subscribe to receive that user’s tweets, and “friends” – people who have a reciprocal following relationship, and each receive each other’s tweets. Twitter users tend to cluster around particular topics, creating a mesh of interconnected users who read and respond to each other’s tweets around the clock.

Perhaps the most fascinating thing about Twitter is the fact that a social network consisting of short, 140-character bursts of information can’t begin to be described in such a compressed space. You’ll really have to try Twitter out yourself to truly understand what it’s all about.

Alternatives to google AdSense

Many people that know anything about online web content marketing and advertising will know a thing or two about Google AdSense. It is currently one of the leaders in this category and many people may look at it as a great option when it comes to advertising online. Google AdSense serves up advertisements that are actually relevant to the content that is shown on a site. Therefore, as a result, there are many different reasons that many people may want to have it. Not only does Google AdSense allow for relevant information to be shared and distributed, it would allow for a lot of traffic to be generated and as a result attract a lot of potential customers or just viewers. However, there are many people that do not care to give in to the Google market and would rather have an alternative.

The good news for them is that there are actually alternatives to the Google AdSense and that there a quite a number in this inventory.  A good alternative is the Yahoo Publishing Network. Known for going head to head with Google, Yahoo has had a lot of serious competition in the past years. In the mid 1990s through the mid 2000s, Yahoo was actually the premier search engine and mail institute on the web and at this time the yahoo publishing network would have been the best option for may people that are looking for ads on their site. However, with the recent subservience that Yahoo has had to give up to Google in search, and so it also led to giving up in the advertising sector to the internet giant.

At present, the Yahoo publishing network does not come anywhere close to what the Google AdSense does in terms of how much traffic it brings, but it does come close in terms of the quality and the name that it brings. Yahoo is great and may still be second best thing to the Google AdSense program for some publishers.

Then there are other alternatives such as Chitika, AdBrite, Infolinks, AdToll, Bidvertiser, Target Point, Fastclick, Exit Junction and Clicksor among the many other ad networks. There are also others that sell text link ads on sites or make users fill up surveys such as CPAlead. The success with using these networks depends on the niche of your site and your marketing skills in the end.

The best bet is to stick to the Google AdSense but the alternatives are out there.

Advantages and Disadvantages of Open Source Software

One looking to enter the foray of open source software must be aware of all that is required and what goes in to Open Source Software. There are many different reasons why one would want to join it and reasons why one may want to avoid it. On the outer side, ostensibly, it seems as a great bargain.

Open Source software is the practice of creating a new software program and allowing it to be open to modifications from all types of people in all different places. It also means that free redistribution must be encouraged, so that the software is open and it can be displayed, used, and modified by many other people. There are many reasons such as this that will allow many different people to get access to software which might eventually lead to a much better software. Though there are so many positives, there may be some negatives within it, and those must be realized in order for someone to join an open source software project. First off, it is important for someone to start off with the advantages of open source software. Open source software can be so especially beneficial because it can lead to many things and there are few barriers to entry.

It allows people with bright minds and or great ideas to share their work all over the world. The work that is shared is able to be edited, and this makes for a great investment. Those who have had a great idea but could never quite find the last link to make an amazing project may find that someone out there was able to make a crucial modification that would make that application top notch and put it over the hump. Additionally, it is very easy to destroy a project if one decides that it is not worth it or for whatever reason. These are reasons that allow for one to go ahead to listen to a friend that has been recommending open source software seeing that it can be beneficial in more than one way.

However, there is always a downside to the great side There can be a power struggle with the rights to the application. These power struggles can get quite ugly as certain people may claim an application that has ascended to the point where it can acquire a heavy amount of funds. There are also many different reasons in which it would be hard for a single application to claim a single entity. Once an application had been worked on by so many potential people, it would be increasingly hard for someone to learn how to claim it or how to share the credit and in bad times, the blame. For such reasons, someone with a great idea should be wary of joining an open source project for the simple fear of the nasty backlash that may occur as a result of miscommunication. There are many reasons to join an open source software project and many reasons to avoid it. For some, the best way is to avoid it and for others the opposite is true.

Free Products offered by Microsoft

With the introduction of Linux, Microsoft has been trying to woo their customers, providing them with more and more free software over the last few years. Some of them include:

  • Windows Live Writer
  • Photosynth
  • World Wide Telescope
  • Windows Live Skydrive
  • Bing

Let’s have a look at each one of them.

Windows Live Writer: Like its name suggests, it is a tool that allows you to write live. You can create a blog post offline in the format of a blog and then publish it directly to your blog, without going through the usual steps. You can also insert pictures, maps, videos, tags, etc. Doesn’t that sound interesting? This is a very useful tool for those of you who blog and write articles often. However, it does not support all blog platforms like ActiveRain as some features won’t work on this platform.

Photosynth: This software helps you display your holiday photos to your friends and family as moving display, like a slide show. Like the name says, the photos will move in a synchronizing manner. You can take some photos and put them all together. Your photos will be merged together and appear as if you are in the picture. You can also use the zoom feature and get a close look at the photo and view its details.

It is all possible with the help of the “synther” which can reconstruct a 3d world from photographs. This tool is useful when you want to share your photos with your loved ones.

World Wide Telescope: It utilizes images and data stored to enable you to explore some of the highest resolution images in the universe in multiple wavelengths. You can also get a lifetime experience by tours from astronomers featuring interesting places in the sky. Your computer can literally function like a telescope with this visualization software. Just imagine looking at the all heavenly bodies through your computer. The Microsoft Research has dedicated the WorldWide Telescope in memory of Jim Gray.

Windows Live Skydrive: It is a file storage service that allows users to upload files and then access them from a web browser. It does that by using the Windows Live ID to access the user’s file and allows them to keep the files private and you can even share it with others if you want.

Some of its features include:

  • Office Web Apps
  • Favorites sharing
  • Windows Live Groups integration
  • RSS feeds

Bing: Bing.com is Microsoft’s search engine, with its homepage attractively colored with new background pictures and interesting facts. The main difference between Bing and other search engines it the fact that it can aid you in decision making. The “Tour Bing” link which is on the top left corner of the home page can help first time users and those of you who want to find out the features of Bing.

You can make adjustments to your location, result listings and many more. Similar to other search engines, it shows search results of related websites. This search engine is very useful for shopping, traveling, and finding great locations.

I hope you found this information on the free goodies offered by Micorsoft useful, what are you waiting for, go ahead and access them.

The Ultimate Programming Language- Which You Must Learn First

Which programming language should I start with? I’m sure this question must have gone through your mind, when you started learning programming. It is a very tough question to answer, as you nearly have more than 50 programming languages to choose from. Well, I too faced this question and found my answer is the C language.

I’m not trying to say that all of you may like C language, but I am trying to put it across to you as the ultimate programming language ever to be created. In this article I will be discussing some of the reasons why I believe C language is the most powerful language when you compare it with other programming languages.

C was developed at AT & T’s Bell Laboratories in USA in the year 1972 by a man called Dennis Ritchie. Many consider it as a very simple language with its simple design, which may put off many beginners. However, there is something about C as in this ever changing IT scenario, where many new languages have come and got obsolete soon, C has remained strong for around 3 decades.

To put it in a better perspective, let’s see some of the reasons why C should be your first programming language.

1) It is a block structured: The sign of a good language is being block structured. The coding exists in separate blocks, which reduces the chances of errors. C being a middle level language also provides both user and machine oriented results.

2) You can’t learn C++, C# or Java directly: It is true, to learn these languages you must familiarize yourself with C and understand its concepts like classes, inheritance, etc. Its foundational concepts are still used in many languages. C++ and C# are based from C and Java shares the same programming concept and syntax of C.

3) Object Oriented Programming is superior: C++, Java, C #, UNIX and Linux languages make use of OOP’s concepts and because of that, many programs are written in C. If you want to write programs in these languages, you need to know C.

4) Speed of execution is fast: This is one of the main reasons that separate C from other languages. Its speed of execution is very fast when compared to other languages.

5) It is used in appliances like refrigerators, washing machines and microwaves: You may not be aware of this, but software’s are written for these products with the help of embedded system programs. These programs are usually written in C language. As you can see, it is being used in our day to day lives also, and affects the way we are living.

After reading the above points, I think you will be satisfied as to why I said C language is the ultimate which must be learned first. There is no other programming language more simple and easy to learn and apply.

Advantages of 64-bit Hardware and Software

You like to use something that you are comfortable with, other than to use something that you are not. Of late, there has been widespread apprehensions about the use of the 64-bit with Microsoft Office Share Point Server 2007. The main reason for that, I believe, is because of the investment in time and effort that went into installing the 32-bit hardware and software.

They don’t want a repeat of that by installing the 64-bit hardware and software, as it will be expensive, time-consuming, and incompatible with the existing software. You will find out after reading this article that these apprehensions are far outweighed than the potential benefits by installing the 64-bit hardware and software.

For that, you ought to first of all understand the working of the 64-bit environment properly. It consists of both hardware and software components and though the conversion of the 64-bit hardware alone may improve performance, the maximum benefit can be derived only when both the 64-bit hardware and software are together.

A 64-bit CPU (central processing unit) can calculate tasks faster than a 32-bit. These benefits can only be got completely if the software that you have installed is designed to for all the features of the hardware. Office Share Point Server 2007 and database software have installation options for 64-bit computers.

The main advantages of 64-bit hardware and software are as follows:

  • Memory addressability
  • Physical memory

1) 32-bit system architecture can address only a 4-GB address space, while 64-bit system architecture can address up to 1,024 GB of physical and addressable memory. You can see the difference.

2) If a server is using 32-bit architecture, then it is limited up to 32 CPUs at the same time a 64-bit architecture can support 64 CPUs and can also provide linear scalability with each additional processor. That is more than double of what a 32-bit architecture can provide you.

3) A 64-bit architecture can provide wider general-purpose registers which can improve the overall application speed. The application speed is very important for getting more work from your servers.

4) The 64-bit architecture is more secure than 32-bit. They allow the following security features which make them safer:

  • Buffer overflow protection
  • Data execution protection
  • Patch Guard

5) The 64-bit architecture allows you to manage more data and run more applications. You can do all this with reduced hardware. When you can do this with reduced hardware, you also reduce your infrastructure costs that occur.

6) It is possible to run a 32-bit software on 64-bit hardware. For example, the Windows 64-bit (WOW64) translation layer enables 32-bit software and 64-bit software to run at the same time on the same system.

Overall, if 32-bit servers are performing adequately and users are satisfied with their operations, applications, and search requests, then there is no need to convert the Office Share Point Server 2007 to a 64-bit. But if the performance of the server is not meeting your expectations, then it’s time to advance to change the equipment and software to a 64-bit environment.

As you can see, the apprehensions are just mere baseless information. The advantages for you are more when you change to a 64-bit environment.
